This new youth program entitled H.A.I.R. - Helping Adolescents Improve Their Reflections designed specifically for girl adolescents. A vital component of this program discusses and promotes proper hair care along with other aspects of personal self-care and image. This will be used as a vehicle to facilitate interactive discussions about personal and societal perceptions, personal image and self-care. This program ommenced insummer 2007 and consists of 3 cycles.
The objective of this program is to improve and increase the young women’s self-esteem, confidence and appearance and in turn the young women can and will effect positive changes within themselves regarding a healthy self body image, identity, marginalization and negotiating personal relationships within their communities and society.
The program activities consist of seven 3-hour sessions (totalling 21 hours). Completion of the program will entitle the youth to receive a certificate, community hours and a care package for their use. In addition the participants will receive a comprehensive Resource Guide detailing the information covered in each session. We anticipate approximately 90 young women (over the 3 cycles), aged 13-18 years to be in attendance. This program will be facilitated in the Jane and Finch area, one of the thirteen priority neighbourhoods.
